We welcome you to the second semester of the 2015/2016 Academic Session. We do hope that the heavily pregnant semester delivers nothing but success and positive results for us. It is important to note that irrespective of what first semester looked like, this is another chance to make things better. Here is another chance to do things in a different and in a much better way and thus, get more fulfilling results.
We find truth in these words of Carl Bard: “Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” Although, you cannot go back to correct the errors of the first semester, you can make changes this semester and get positive and better results. Second semester of every session is very peculiar and an understanding of its peculiarity is needed to make a success of it.
To the first year students, this is your first experience of what second semester looks like in the University of Ibadan. It is important that you do not get carried away with the various activities that will be organised in your halls of residence, religious assemblies and in the faculty. While it is good to attend these programmes, you must also be well aware it is only a fool who fails to manage his time. You must also prioritise your activities while being selective.
To the 200-400 level classes, we all can tell the tales of what second semester looks like. However, as a reminder, this is the semester that is well filled with a lot of juicy, entertaining and also time-wasting activities. This is the semester in which every organisation in which there is at least two people deem it fit to dedicate one whole week to various activities. Thus, we must be careful and selective in our attendance of these programmes and also ensure that we do not forget our main assignment in the university. Also, irrespective of what the first semester results have been, you must know that failure will never overtake you if your will and determination to succeed is strong enough. Thus, shake off the failure or unsatisfactory performances and look towards a better and more productive semester. This, however, can only be achieved through more hard work.
To the most senior class in the faculty, this is the final lap of your LL.B journey. We wish you speed, success and the favour of your supervisors as you put finishing touches to your projects.
It is no longer news that last semester ushered in a new administration in the Law Students‟ Society. It is also common knowledge that law students have high hopes about the current administration.
One of the areas where improvements are expected is the Law Week. Law students anticipate a better Law Week than we have had in the past, something different from the norm, incorporation of new and exciting programmes in the Week and of course, an exquisite law dinner. Also, it is expected that chamber meetings would take a better shape in this tenure such that law students are encouraged to attend. At this juncture, it is important that we commend the already visible improvement at chamber meetings as well as the efforts of the Chamber Support Force. We do hope that this is sustained as he who sets his hands on the plough and looks back is not worthy of appreciation. Again, it is expected that there would exist a better executive-electorate relationship this tenure. We do not expect that our executives would become gods that can only be approached with bowed heads and folded hands. We look forward to the sustenance of the rapport and “friendship” initiated while
soliciting for votes. We also expect that they are eager to carry us along in the execution of their plans as they did in the communication of their manifestoes.
Finally, as we set off this semester, work hard for what you want because it won‟t come to you without a fight. You have to be strong and courageous and know that you can do anything you set your mind at. If you have a positive attitude and constantly strive to give your best, eventually, you will overcome your immediate problems and find you are ready for greater challenges. Be strong, for yourself!
Once again, The Law Press Organisation wishes you a success-filled semester.
