UI ORIENTATES NEWLY APPOINTED ACADEMIC STAFF

The management of the University of Ibadan have organised an orientation programme for their newly employed staff. The programme which takes place at the Mac Arthur Building commenced on 9 June, 2014 and will continue till 9 July 2014.

Attendees were urged to deliver their responsibilities with all fairness as they serve as the bridge-builders between the town and the gown.

AS PROFESSOR E.A AIYELARI EMERGES AS NEW DVC ADMIN, PROFESSOR ADERINTOEMERGES NEW DEAN, POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL.

At the special meeting of the senate on Monday 9 June, 2014 an election was conducted to fill the post of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) which became vacant on Tuesday 13 May, 2014 after the expiration of Professor Arinola’s tenure.

The election which was between two dons, former deans in their respective faculties, Professor E.A Aiyelari of the department of Agronomy and Professor Ogunkola of the department of Economics. Professor E.A Aiyelari emerged as the new DVC admin after defeating his counterpart from the Faculty of the Social sciences.

In a similar vein, Professor A.A Aderinto, department of sociology emerged as the Dean, Postgraduate School after battling out his opponent, Professor V.O Adetimirin, head of department, Agronomy.

 

IROKO MUST GO – ZIKITES PROTEST AS EXECUTIVES FACE SDC

On Tuesday evening, 10 June, 2014, zikites converged at the front of the EXCOS secretariat, from where they were briefed about the happenings in the Great Baluba kingdom ranging from the curfew placed on the finalist block; why new executives are yet to be sworn in; outgoing executives facing students disciplinary committee for not remitting the money realised from the 50th anniversary of the hall into the university’s purse. Motion was moved to protest round all hall of residence, to get the entire uites aware of the happenings and that was done moving from hall to hall.

 

YOU ARE THE FIRST AFRICAN AMBASSADOR TO VISIT UI DURING MY REGIME- ADEWOLE TELLS SUDAN AMBASSADOR

The department of Arabic and Islamic Studies organised an international conference, the second of its kind, it was held at Trenchard hall and was themed: African challenges and the role of African leaders in managing changes.

Dr Tag Elsir Majoub Ali, the Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Nigeria did justice to the theme as he delivered the lecture. He said it is not religion; tribe, colour or language that is causing the crises all over Africa but the result of not believing in ourselves and leaders who do not have the courage to face challenges before calling external countries who contribute to the problem rather than alleviating them.

He further stressed the importance of women in leadership, saying “I trust women more than men in power, in fact, every position I served till today, women are always my assistants because I trust them for their faithfulness. In my sudan, the ratio of graduates between female and male from our varsities is 55: 45 and they serve in high positions”

The vice- chancellor of the University of Ibadan, who came a little behind schedule said in his goodwill message that he is highly delighted with the lecture and promised to upload it on the university website.

He said “I must admit that your visit to UI is an august one, very few African Ambassadors Come to UI but many European and American Ambassadors come, last week we still received a French Ambassador but I must say you are the first African Ambassador to Visit UI In my regime as the vice-chancellor”.

T.COOL, EDOSA AND OTHERS IN COLLOQUIUM

The University of Ibadan students’ union continued in their attempts to welcome the freshers as they treated them to a programme tagged: FRESHERS WELCOME. Day one of the event was a colloquium held on Thursday, 12 June, 2014 at the SUB event centre, themed: ROLE OF STUDENTS’ UNIONISM IN COMBATING EDUCATIONAL CHALLENGES IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

The past two presidents of the union, Tokunbo Salako fondly called T.cool; the president of the pioneer team and Ekhator Raymond Edosa; the president of the impossibility team were there, sharing their experience to freshmen who will later become stakeholders at different levels of student unionism.

THE POWER BEHIND EVERY SUCCESSFUL AND GOOD GOVERNMENT IS THE LEGISLATIVE- PROF ALADA

The legislative arm of the students’ union organized a programme, the first of its kind called LEGISLATIVE SUMMIT. The summit was tagged “Building better leaders for a better future”.

In his welcome Address, Prof. A.A Alada who was representing the vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. I. F Adewole, said that there is no governance without legislation even though the executive arm might want to act in a military way, an attitude which is finding its way to our campuses today. He further stressed the importance of the programme saying it came at a time it is needed.

Many students were disappointed at the absence of many of the important dignitaries expected and the inability of the organisers to launch the book written by Speaker of the SRC, titled: Legislative business and proceedings as was proposed.

The students however expressed hope for a better event next year, one that will not only portray the hard work of the legislative but also project the image of UI as she strives to build the leaders of tomorrow.

BEEJAY EMERGES BEST DANCER AT THE STUDENTS’ UNION VARIETY NIGHT

Beejay as he was identified, a student of The department of Adult education was the standing star of the variety night organised by the Students Union as he wowed the rapt audience with his dance skills.

At the freshers welcome variety night held at the SUB foyer on the evening of Friday, 13 June, 2014, a variety of competitions were featured; singing, dancing, eating among others. However the most riveting of all was the dance competition.

In the same vein, the Kegites Club International also welcomed the freshers with a performance at a site behind the SUB foyer. This was a way to get the freshmen aware of the Kegites Club International whose headquarters is on the premier campus since they were not present to showcase themselves on the last day of the management organised Orientation programme.
