The University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council, after rejecting the recommendations of the disciplinary committee, has asked the erring Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the union, Olalekan Ajibola, to write a public apology to the general public and also to the SRC.
The SRC also asked him to pay a fine of Twenty-five (25) thousand naira before Wednesday 12th of April and if defaulted, he should be suspended from office for three 3 weeks and also be subjected to community service which is to be monitored by the house.
A 5-man committee had established cases of breach of the constitution and abuse of office by the PRO. It, therefore, recommended that the PRO be suspended for three weeks and be compelled to write a public apology to Uites, among other recommendations.
However, the house rejected the recommendations of the disciplinary committee secret-ballot voting, in which forty-five (45) members voted against the recommendation and 27 voted in support.
After discarding the recommendations of the committee, three motions were moved:
Motion 1, moved by Hon Adebisi proposed the suspension of the PRO for a week and N5000 fine to be paid by Tuesday, 11th of April, 2023 and if not paid, there should be an extension of the suspension by 3 weeks.
Motion 2, moved by Hon Marshall, N3,000 fine and a public apology letter.
Motion 3, moved by Hon Adeola, a public apology letter, an apology letter to the house (SRC), N25,000 fine and community service. The fine must be paid latest, Wednesday, 12th April 2023, if not paid, there should be a suspension for 3 weeks.
22 members voted for Motion 1, three members voted for Motion 2, and 32 in favour of Motion 3. Motion 3 was adopted by the House.
Observers, excluding Pressmen, were sent out of the chamber during the voting exercise.
