Following the resumption of academic activities for Postgraduates, the Covid-19 Emergency Response Research Committee of the University have made some recommendations in order to avoid the widespread of the virus on campus.
The university authority had earlier said no students would accommodated in hostels during the first semester of the 2020/2021 academic session.
However, it has allowed few postgraduate students to resume physically on campus for the completion of their examinations. In the light of this, the Committee recommended a 500ml hand sanitizer and a spray sanitizer as a must-have for postgraduates who would be accommodated on campus.
According to the statement released by the University, two halls, one for male and one for female, with provision of regular water supply, multiple hand wash stations would be allocated to the said student for ease of management.
The Committee also placed ban on activities that encourage display of corpse and any gathering; religious, formal or informal, more than 50% of the facility for the time being.
Consistent use of nose and mouth cover is mandatory for everyone on campus and defaulters to the rules will be restricted and reprimanded.
The statement also said “public transportation should not carry more than fifty percent of their capacity in compliance with social distancing rules”.
“Persons aged 60 years and above and/or with co-morbidities should stay at home and avoid crowds”.
In addition, leadership of offices should take responsibility for adequate ventilation in offices, adopt virtual meetings and ensure adherence to the recommended safety precautions.
It should be noted that some specific hotspot for the virus have been identified and extra caution is being expected in these areas which includes halls of residence, lecture rooms, laboratories, clinics, demonstration rooms, library, Jaja clinic, Veterinary Teaching Hospital, SUB, Admission office, faculty/departmental offices, event centres, bus stops and car parks, postgraduate and staff school, UI shopwell, Abadina areas with major shops, Idia Village market, churches and mosques, UI staff club and zoological garden.
In a situation whereby physical lecture cannot be stopped, splitting of large classes is mandatory, proper use of nose and mouth cover and rotational teaching model should be adopted in order to avoid over crowding.
Eateries are expected to promote the use of take away packs, business hours should be regulated which is from 7:30am to 6:30pm and compliance must be monitored.
In order to create awareness, the University will involve UI radio, ITeMs, flyers for hot spots and posters would be put in strategic places and virtual seminars are to be organized for each faculty.
“The management seeks the support of staffs and students as defaulters would be reprimanded, restricted and the right of place would be forfeited.”
