The University of Ibadan Students Union President, General Secretary and Treasurer have been sanctioned with a seven-day community service, during the 8th Emergency Plenary Meeting of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Students’ Representative Council (UISU SRC), which is currently in session today, Saturday, 8th of November 2025 at the Student Representative Chamber.
The matters that led to the sanctioning of the three Executive members of the Union, who are also constitutional signatories to the Union’s account was due to the allegations regarding financial misappropriation, breach of fiduciary duty, fiscal irresponsibility and breach of constitutional provisions amounting to gross misconduct as it concerns the Union’s account, committed separately by Covenant Odedele (President), Segun Olowu (General Secretary), and Joshua Bioku (Treasurer).
According to the report of the Disciplinary Committee, it affirmed that the Disciplinary Committee after hearing the parties (the President, the General Secretary and the Treasurer) has established the following:
- The Executive Council did not obtain a ₦2 million loan from the CBN but rather received an upfront from the University Management sourced from students’ dues.
- Between 25th–27th June 2025, the Executive Council paid the school fees of about 40 UITES.
On 27th June 2025, ₦500,000 was withdrawn from the Union account without Council approval. - Before the upfront was released, the Executive borrowed ₦1.5 million from friends and family.
- On 1st July 2025, ₦1.5 million was withdrawn from the Union account without Council approval to settle the borrowed funds.
- The Council was not informed of the whole process at any stage till the referral of 29th August 2025.
- On 1st September 2025, the Executive Council wrote to the SRC explaining the process and providing the details of the beneficiaries of the scheme.
Furthermore, the Disciplinary Committee report recognised three constitutional breaches in the actions of the parties which include breaches in the constitutional provisions of:
- Article 7(2): failure to keep the Council constantly informed of their actions.
- Article 7(3): obtaining concessions and loans (₦1.5m from friends/family) without Council approval and University notification.
- Article 28, Section 2(i): unauthorised withdrawals of ₦500,000 (27th June) and ₦1.5m (1st July).
Also, in the report, the Disciplinary Committee recommended and decided that in pursuant to Article 28, Section 3, the President, General Secretary, and Treasurer being the signatories of the union account should be suspended for one (1) week and to handover the Union property in their custody as follows: the President to the Vice President, the General Secretary to the Assistant General Secretary and the Treasurer to the Finance Committee Chairman.
However, in the debate of the committee disciplinary recommendations for the erring parties, the committee disciplinary recommendations were rejected and another motion of disciplinary measures was adopted, whereby the President, the General Secretary and the Treasurer were sanctioned to engage in a community service of seven days, three full hours daily (5pm to 8pm) at the University of Ibadan Main Gate to control traffic and also to write a letter of apology addressed to the students’ community.
