UIAA Holds Congress and Election, Swears in New Executives

University of Ibadan Alumni Association, UIAA worldwide, has sworn in new sets of executives on the 21st of November 2020, for another tenure of two  years.

The executives were sworn in during the UIAA biennial congress and election which was held at the Same Edith Okowa multipurpose auditorium at the Alumni Complex, University of Ibadan.

The Congress/Election had in attendance distinguished Alumni such as the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Abel Olayinka; the Immediate Past President of UIAA, IPP, Dr Kemi Emina; Acting Chairman of the UIAA Screening committee Mr Kyaagba A Hyacinth and Mr Lambert Iwueke

The Congress, which was done before the election and swearing-in, began with a welcome address by the President of the UIAA, Prof. Elsie Adewoye, where she welcomed everyone but gave a special welcome to the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Abel Olayinka. She said: “We thank you, sir, for your support and good works of repositioning our University which was confirmed by the latest World ranking of Universities, making UI the best in Nigeria, the first in West Africa, 7th in Africa and 500th in the world”

In addition, highlighting her accomplishments as the president over the past two years, she said: “By the grace of God, and the support of the Executive Committee and Executive Council we have tried to furnish gigantic projects built by our  Immediate Past President, IPP, pay up the indebtedness to contractors on the PG hall of residence multipurpose auditorium and guest house extension, though in instalments” 


She went further to list other accomplishments such as the 250 KVA generator for the auditorium, the 54 bedroom Post-Graduate Hall of residence which has been furnished with beds, tables and chairs to assist and encourage occupation by UI Post Graduate Students, and so on. 

The Congress witnessed several deliberations by the members and delegates and ended in the formation of an Electoral Committee which was chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) of the University, Professor A. B Ekanola, and Dr Adegbola Dauda, Prof. Olowo Samuel, Mr Jaiyeola Phillip Olabode, Pastor Tunde Akinola as members 

The voting commenced with Sixty one electorates from ten branches with not more than seven eligible delegates each and twenty-two electorates from three chapters with not more than three eligible delegates each. The branches present were Benue, Imo, Edo, Abia, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun, Enugu, Ekiti and Delta. And the chapters represented were Asaba, Ika, Isoko, Warri, Ughelli, Gboko and Okiti-Pupa.

In addition to the electorates from the Branches and Chapters, twelve National officers summed up the number of electorates to a total of ninety-five. And fifteen positions had aspirants; out of which thirteen aspirants were voted in unopposed, save the three Ex-officio positions which had five aspirants: Dr Epochi-Olise Ruth with seventy votes, Prince E.C.M Okwara with eleven votes, Mr Norbert Adjemrughwe with Sixty Nine votes, Mr Michael Popoola, and Engr Alao Adewale with fifty-five votes. 

Also, the aspirant vying for the position of the Financial Secretary was disqualified based on the violation of a UIAA’s rule of compulsory attendance of National Executive Council meetings by the aspirant’s branch, Ondo.  


At the end of the election, the following persons were sworn in as the newly elected officials of UIAA: Barrister Fidelis Mbadugba – Legal Adviser; Dr Epochi-Olise Ruth – Ex-Officio; Mr Norbert Adjemrughwe – Ex-Officio; Engineer Alao Adewale – Ex-Officio; Miss Joy Isikwei – Social Secretary; Comrade Lambert Iwueke – Public Secretary; Mrs Flora Olaifa Ph.D – Treasurer; Comrade Uchemadu Abosi – 2nd Assistant Secretary; Mr Filani Gbenga S. – 1st Assistant Secretary

Prof S.G Nyityo – Secretary; Chief Joseph A. Alaskan – 3rd Vice President; Chief (Sir) Francis Odion – 2nd Vice President; Dr Uchenna Uzokwe – 1st Vice; President Elsie O. Adewoye – President.
