UI Sports Captains Decry Neglect of Facilities in Open Letter

By Olokungbemi Gerald

Captains of all University of Ibadan sports teams have decried the deteriorating state of sporting facilities in an open letter released on Saturday, August 16, 2025.

Addressed to the office of the Vice Chancellor, Sports Council, the Union of Campus Journalists, university management, and student leaders, the strongly worded letter highlighted what the athletes described as “an overall lack of institutional support for sports on campus.”

They cited restricted access to facilities, limited participation in external competitions, unavailability of council buses, lack of training equipment, and neglect of inter-hall and inter-faculty tournaments.

The athletes also made recommendations, including “unrestricted access to sports facilities for all registered teams” and the full participation of UI teams in upcoming competitions such as the Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) in November 2025.

This development follows a UIMSA Press report six weeks ago that detailed the persistent neglect of sports within the institution.

As of press time, the Sports Council and university authorities are yet to release a formal response.
