The University of Ibadan has installed the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III as the 7th Chancellor of the Univeristy at an installation ceremony held recently at the International Conference Centre (ICC), University of Ibadan.
The installation ceremony which was also celebrated with the 67th Foundation day Anniversary of the University had in attendance the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari represented by his Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Also, at the ceremony the University conferred an honorary Doctor of Law degree on the 20th Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar.
In his address, Sultan of Sokoto pledge his allegiance to the university. He said that he is ready to support the university’s administration and the university community at large. He further stated that the university must strive to expand the frontier of knowledge and must at all time never compromise the ethical and moral standard of the school and also on the part of students. He also said that research is important to a nation’s growth. “Any nation that cannot support research will not be able to cope with current challenges the world is facing”, The Sultan said.
The Sultan of Sokoto, who is also the President General of Nigerian National Supreme council for Islamic Affairs however emphasized that Islam has nothing to do with the insurgency of Boko Haram prevalent in the North East of the country. He said he believe very soon the insurgency will be a thing of the past.
Also present at the occasion were 428 graduands who were awarded Doctor of Philosophy cutting across the various faculties in the University. Also in attendance were the Pro- chancellor & Chairman governing Council of the University, Dr. Dahiru Mustapha, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, Governor of Oyo State, Sen. Abiola Ajimobi, DVC Academics, Prof. Gbemisola Oke, University Librarian, Dr. Benedict Oladele, Bursar, Mr. I.O Aponmade, Deans of Faculties among others.
