The department of Virology, University of Ibadan has established an Endowment fund in honour of Professor Olufemi David Olaleye, a virologist of international repute who breathed his last on July 27, after a brief battle with COVID-19.
The fund was set up during an event tagged “A day of tribute in honour of Professor Olufemi David Olaleye” which was held in his honour on Wednesday, September 29 at the International Conference Center (ICC), UI.
“Since Professor Olaleye devoted most of his life to working on epidemic-prone disease, it is only fitting that the aim of the fund was to train the next generation of researchers and develop their capacity for cutting-edge research to address challenges of current and emerging epidemic-prone infectious diseases of public health importance”, the acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Ekanola said while reading the synopsis of the Endowment fund.
It was also described as a way of maintaining Professor Olaleye’s legacy of holding junior faculties and researchers’ hands through their career development process.
While giving her welcome remarks, the acting Head of Department of Virology, Professor Georgina Odaibo, said Professor Olaleye was an excellent virologist who served his community selflessly and made indelible marks in the sand of time. “He led a good life and replicated himself in the lives of many who will continue to implement his legacy.”
Professor Olaleye was described by many people as someone who exulted due process and frowned at manipulative practices. He was also praised for the way he cultivated beautiful relationships with everyone at all levels.
Born in Ogbomosho, Professor Olaleye’s passion for scholarship and research was obvious as he rose through the ranks quickly after his employment with the University of Ibadan.
