Adebayo Abdulrahman, an undergraduate of the Department of Political Science and Editor-in-chief of the Union of Campus Journalists, has been selected for the 2023 WAJIC fellowship by the Centre for Journalism, Innovation and Development.
The fellowship will enable him to attend the 2023 West Africa Journalism Innovation Conference in Abuja, Nigeria, covering the $200 registration fee, air travel, accommodation, among other expenses.
In a statement, the organizing body highlighted the overwhelming response to the conference, with more than 760 applications received.
The theme of the journalism innovation conference is “Accountability Journalism: Nurturing Innovation for a Sustainable Future.”
“#WAJIC’23 will gather over 300 journalists, media professionals, academics, policymakers, and government institutions, all driven by a shared objective of fostering innovation for a sustainable future. Beyond being a conference, it serves as a collaborative platform for networking and establishing meaningful connections that have the potential to transform the journalism landscape in West Africa,” the statement explained.
The conference will feature workshops, expert panels, and explore media innovations and technological tools that can fortify journalism practice in the African region.
Reacting to his selection, Abdulrahman expressed gratitude to the organizers for the rare privilege.
“To be selected to participate in an assembly of some of the finest minds in journalism across the continent fills me with great joy. I am especially grateful for the rare privilege from the WAJIC Fellowship Committee.
“I look forward to an intense period of learning and unlearning various aspects of journalism, especially how what we do influences public policy,” he said.
