The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan (UCJ UI) in conjunction with the miss Zainab Sanni, a Fellow of Female Reporter Leadership Program (FRLP) organized training sessions on Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Reporting.
The Keynote speaker, Mrs Ibukun Otesile, expounded on Gender-Based Violence, sexual abuse, sexual assault, and various factors that engender Gender-Based Violence and its effects on individuals, families and the society at large.
“The media has done more harm than good in resolving gender-based violence,” she said.
While listing media as one of the major factors encouraging Gender-Based Violence (GBV), she charged Campus Journalists and the Mainstream Media on how to report GBV, Sexual Assaults in creating awareness, being established as an authority, engaging the University Management and Setting Agenda for the authorities in the University environment.
Miss Zainab O Sanni, Deputy Head of News Room at Agidigbo FM explained the need for “impartiality in reporting of Gender and sexual-based violence”. She emphasized the need to shift the spotlight of GBV to portrays both males and females as the victims of these acts.
The event had in attendance Mrs Ibukun of Oyo State Rapid Response Squad, Miss Zainab of Agidigbo FM, Miss Titilope Fadare (Virtual), UCJ UI President, Miss Rauf Fasilat, Members of the Union’s Executive, as well as other members.
