UCJ UI Concludes Egbokhare Debate Preliminaries, Announces Results

On Saturday, 17th February, 2024, the Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan held the final preliminary round of the Francis Egbokhare Inter-Press Debate Competition.

The preliminary rounds which began at 2:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Education lecture room F202/203 saw eights teams go against each other in the hall and faculty streams.

The preliminary round 3 which was the determinant round for the debating Press organisations to proceed to the final round scheduled to take place as part of the week-long lined up events for the 35th UCJUI Induction ceremony.

In the faculty stream, Law Press emerged the winner with 72.3 while FATSSA Press had 69.7 while the Clinical Sciences Press lost to AFAS Press with a total of 73.2 against the 74.38 amassed by AFAS Press.
 
In the hall stream, ABH Press secured a win against Indy Press with 75 while Indy Press 69.7. In the round between Idia Hall Press and Zik Hall Press, Idia Hall Press lost to Zik Hall Press with 70.85 against the 71.2 which Zik Hall Press had.

At the end of the preliminary round 3, there was an aggregation of all the points each Press Organisation has amassed during the course of the three preliminary rounds to determine the qualified press organisations who will proceed to the final stage.

In the faculty stream, the aggregation saw FATSSA Press proceeding to the finals against Law Press with an aggregate of 73.96 while Law Press had 72.83. For AFAS Press and Clinical Sciences Press, the aggregation saw Clinical Sciences Press proceeding to the finals with an aggregate of 73.84 while AFAS Press had 72.26.

In the hall stream, the aggregation saw Indy Press and ABH Press with aggregates of 73.1 and 73.23 earning them a qualification to the finals, with Zik Hall Press and Idia Hall Press losing out in the halls stream with 71.72 and 71.12 respectively.

Indy Press and ABH Press, the top two qualifying teams from the aggregation of the preliminary phases will now challenge each other for the title at the Grand Finale scheduled to take place on Saturday, 24th February, 2024.
