Topic: The Bane of Ethno-religious Conflicts in Nigeria
Bearing in mind the results of the division of the nation into regions by the colonial masters.
Expressing concern about failure of the family, the basic unit of the society, to infuse the spirit of tolerance and accommodation to its members.
Alarmed by the rate of poverty, corruption and injustice in the country.
Fully aware of Nigerians’ ethnic and religious affiliation.
Keeping in mind the heterogeneous nature of the state structure.
Having considered reports that the conflicts have led to instability in the state’s economy, hence, poverty.
Noting with regret that this has posed a threat to adequate growth and development, as well as, insecurity.
Reaffirming the existence of national crises, political apathy, war, nepotism, hence, leading to the destruction of lives and properties.
Sharing with concern that the crises have shunned away foreign investors, hence, unemployment.
Viewing with great concern the presence of inter-ethnic/inter-religious hatred among the populace, hence, absence of peaceful co-existence.
Concerned that this has led to the loss of opportunities on the part of the populace, hence, causing brain drain.
Expressing the need for peaceful co-existence in the country;
- Calls for equality irrespective of religion and ethnicity.
- Emphasizes the importance of unity in diversity among the populace.
- Reaffirms the urgent need for proper family education and orientation on peaceful relationships with people of the same and different religious/ethnic background.
- Proposes the establishment of policies that will tackle corruption, favoritism, and injustice.
- Suggests that religious/ethnic leaders encourage and educate their people on the reasons and benefits of peaceful co-existence.
- Urges the government to reignite the failing agencies that are responsible for ensuring unity and peaceful co-existence in the country. Like the National Orientation Agency, Federal Government Colleges (Unity Schools), as well as, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
- Reiterate the government demonstrates quality leadership through intelligent decisions and policies.
- It makes an urgent appeal to the media to refrain from the news that is capable of causing religious/ethnic uproar.
