It was unarguably a day of joy in the land of the Aisle Tower when the news broke that the Student Union has been reinstated by the university management. As a consequence to that, the Electoral Committee has released a guideline and timetable to govern the smooth conduct of the forthcoming election.
On the other side, that same accomplishment is a unanimous victory for sports and all sports enthusiast within the university community. I dare to say it is one singular thing that calls for wide celebration. This is evident in the fact that since the Union got suspended back in 2017, sporting activities within the university has been in a state of comatose. Ranging from poor quality of competitions to inadequate funding. From lack of administrative assistance to ineffective sport development. I mean, even the Almighty UI Football Team has failed to qualify beyond the group stage of the HiFL Cup since inception.
However, though, this is not to belittle some elements of good works and achievements that were accomplished during this past few years. But the resuscitation of the Union will be a good mechanism towards reviving all sporting activities on campus. It is therefore, pertinent that we all pay close attention
to whosoever we will decide to run the affairs of sports at SU level. The question will then we left to deal with is, how do we identify the-right-man for the-right-job?
“The candidate with the cleanest, most lucid and convincing manifesto may become the worst in terms of performance. Ojo Aderemi, the suspended SU president won in all the halls because he had the oratory prowess, convincing spirit, sponsored and looked more articulate to carry the task of the union but he was only 21 days in office! Reason was that there were too many interests dictating his moves. And without the equipoise of sound judgment and diplomacy we were stagnated for two sessions!” said a UITE.
So beyond manifesto and coherence, examining the candidate in terms of character and capacity is sacrosanct. This is the right time to get it right. Because, like DeVos affirmed above, it is impossible to win the victory unless we dare to battle.
ARÈNE DE FOOTBALL: WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
Hello and good day to every sports enthusiast in the premier University of Ibadan. The entire Sports Desk humbly welcome us all back for the second half of 2018/2019 session. We can only hope that Fair Play dominates the semester and without any Injury casualty. And above all, we beseech all manner of Extra Time.
In view of the semester, I want to give us a little insight as to the football activities to be expected. Some of these are as follows:
