SRC Reduces 2025 SU Week Budget from ₦17.15 Million to ₦12.98 Million

The University of Ibadan Students’ Representatives Council (UI’SRC) of has further reduced the total budget for the 2025 Students’ Union Week from the ₦17,150,805 initially proposed by the Financial Committee to ₦12,979,575, inclusive of a 5% miscellaneous allocation of ₦618,075.

The adjustment followed several deliberations and reviews held across multiple emergency sittings of the Council between October 12 and 15, 2025. During these sessions, Honourable members made additional downward revisions to key events in the Union Week schedule to ensure prudence and transparency in spending.

One of the most significant cuts was to the Cultural Day budget, which was brought down to ₦982,500 after the Council resolved to provide only one horse instead of two, scrap masquerades entirely, and add ₦20,000 for cleaning the Students’ Union Building (SUB) pitch after the event.

The Inter-Hall Sports Festival also witnessed a notable reduction, as members voted to remove the ₦42,000 initially budgeted for band boys, citing that various hall bands would be available to perform for free. The number of rented tables and canopies was also reduced, bringing the approved total to ₦595,500.

Earlier, the Tech Conference budget had been reviewed to ₦999,050, while the Health Day was reduced to ₦224,550, following a directive that medical materials like cotton boards and testing kits be sourced through partnerships instead of purchases.

Other events, such as the Mr. and Miss UI Pageant, were also adjusted, with total spending pegged at ₦1,206,000 after the Council reduced the cash prizes for winners from ₦120,000, ₦90,000, and ₦70,000 to ₦90,000, ₦70,000, and ₦50,000, respectively.

The SRC’s review also affected the awards ceremony with two committee head awards scrapped due to procedural irregularities attributed to the Vice President.

The Council emphasised that the latest downward review was aimed at promoting the efficient use of resources. With the revisions, the total budget for the 2025 Students’ Union Week now stands at ₦12,979,575.
