Inter-Hall Sports Competition to commence on 27th, October- Phemstrong
The inter-hall sports competition which was earlier slated to commence on 20th of October is now scheduled to begin one week after the proposed date. This came as a result of the meeting of various sports ministers with the Sports Secretary of the Students Union.
It is believed that the postponement is as a result of the postgraduate students who are billed to commence their examinations on the 20th of October. The event which comprises of sports such as Soccer, Volleyball, Swimming, Track and Field games etc. will kick-start with an opening match between Kuti Hall and Tedder Hall at the New Stadium, Awo by 3pm on 27th, October.
Morocco Rejects AFCON 2015 – South Africa on standby
A major blow has hit Africa football as Morocco who is supposed to host the 2015 African cup of nations AFCON2015, have pulled out. Reports coming through are that either North African neighbours, Egypt or 2013 hosts, South Africa could step in as alternative hosts for the African football spectacle.
Earlier, Morocco had submitted a request to CAF to postpone next year’s edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in order to stop the spread of Ebola; however CAF have responded by declaring that the tournament should go on as scheduled.
“This demand is motivated essentially by the last report from the World Health Organisation, which contained alarming numbers at the extent and spread of the virus,” said Morocco sports Minister Mohammed Ouzzine.
Aguero Inspires City to Massive Demolition of Spurs
Sergio Aguero scored all four of his side’s goals as Manchester City beat 10-man Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on Saturday in a thrilling Premier League match.
Aguero netted twice in each half, converting a pair of penalties and missing a third spot kick as he pulled level with Diego Costa as the Premier League’s leading scorer on nine goals.
The match supplied drama throughout the 90 minutes, with referee Jon Moss awarding four penalties, two of which were saved.
Christian Eriksen scored the lone goal for Spurs, who finished the match with 10 men after Federico Fazio saw red in the second half for a foul on Aguero. Trailing 2-1 in the second half, Tottenham had a chance to equalise, but Roberto Soldado had a penalty saved.
Russian tennis Federation chief apologises for Wiliams sisters jibe
Russian Tennis Federation (RTF) President Shamil Tarpishchev has officially apologised for making an inappropriate comment about the Williams sisters on state television.
Appearing on a chat show, the programme host said: “I was at the Olympics, where Maria Sharapova was in the final, playing with one, with one of the…” Tarpishchev responded by saying “Williams brothers”.
The Women’s Tennis Federation fined him $US25, 000 ($A28, 571) and demanded a personal apology as well as disqualifying him for a year from working in an organisational capacity.
Justin Gatlin misses out on shortlist for top award
Justin Gatlin has failed to make the three-man shortlist for the IAAF World Athletes of the Year award. The two-time former drug cheat’s inclusion as one of 10 contenders for the global award provoked outrage, with fellow nominee Robert Harting, the German discus thrower, asking to be removed from contention in protest.
IAAF vice-president Lord Sebastian Coe had also questioned the 32-year-old sprinter’s nomination. The American is now out of the running for the men’s award, though, after Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim, Kenya’s marathon world record holder Dennis Kipruto Kimetto and French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie were voted as the final three.
