Sigma Club UI held it’s press conference for the second national edition of the Roseline Etuokwu Sigma Club Quiz Competition today, 31st of March, 2025 on Google Meet.
The Press conference was held in order to inform the public about the final stage of the quiz competition which would hold on April 12, 2025.
The quiz competition, launched by Chief Ibrahim Olanrewaju in 2021, initially started with just Ibadan North Local Government, featuring a few schools from the area. Following its success, the competition expanded to all 33 local governments in Oyo State in 2023.
By 2024, it had grown into a national competition, attracting participants from every state, meaning that this year’s edition of the competition is the second edition of the National Competition.
The National Coordinator for the Quiz Competition, Loyalist Olaoluwa Olagoke in the press conference, stated that the quiz competition would be between senior secondary schools that had gone through the preliminary stages of the competition at the state level and had emerged top at the regional level.
The competition will therefore be between six schools from the six regions in Nigeria.
He further stated that the aim of the competition was to provide an incentive for students who had put their all into studying and learning.
“We want to encourage as many people who are diligent and hardworking to come and participate so that they can have s form of recognition” he stated during the press conference.
The prize money for the winning school is five million naira. two million and one million for second and third places respectively and a five hundred thousand naira consolation prize for each of the last three schools.
The coordinator further stated that the quiz questions will be taken from Mathematics, English and General Knowledge, and would be answered orally by the participants.
He further added that over 600 schools registered to participate in the competition this year, and it had over one hundred percent increase compared to it’s maiden edition in 2024.
However, he explained that students representing their school were not absolutely guaranteed the full prize money, as distribution was left to the discretion of the schools.
He emphasized that the Sigma club gave suggestions for the distribution, but have no control over how the money is shared.
“We only give suggestion to the school”, He said. “The suggestion is 40-40-20 . 40 percent to the school, 40 percent to the students and 20 percent to the teachers”.
When asked what were his projections for the future of the competition, Loyalist Olagoke mentioned that he desired that Sigma Club would be able to give a prize money of #200,000,000 to the winning school.
The quiz competition is slated to hold on Saturday, 12 April, 2025, at Trenchard Hall.
Attendance is purely by registration, however, registration is free for UItes and closes tomorrow, Tuesday, 1st April, 2025.
