The Department of Microbiology has today, 12th August, defeated Vet medicine 4-2 on penalties to book a place in the quarter-finals against Psychology.
The match went underway at the SUB football pitch with both teams aiming to join Statistics, Psychology and MBBS in the quarter finals.
Both sides struggled to seize control of the game in the early stages as it was pretty much end to end. Tesleem failed to trouble the Microbiology goalkeeper after he sent in a free kick that was won by Tolu on the right flank.
Microbiology on the other launched several counter attacks against their Veterinary Medicine opponents but failed to trouble Orodin who was quick off his line to thwart a couple of dangers.
The referee signaled an end to the first 30 minutes of the encounter where Microbiology played slightly better but lacked the cutting edge to punish their opponents.
As Veterinary Medicine veteran striker Hessy warmed up on the touch line, Tolu failed to trouble the Microbiology goalkeeper when he latched on to a poor clearance from the opposing defenders.
Hessy’s introduction for Veterinary Medicine and Microbiology’s threat on the counter attack was not enough to change the nil-nil score line.
At the end of 60 minutes, the referee signaled the end of the fourth round of 16 encounter of the day and for the third time already, another penalty shoot out was going to decide who qualifies into the next round.
At the end of the penalty shoot out, Microbiology secured a 4-2 victory over Veterinary Medicine to advance into the last 8 of the competition.
The Faculty of science outfit who were eliminated last year by eventual third place winners MBBS will now face Psychology in the next round for a place in the semi finals. On the other hand,Veterinary Medicine’s fairy tale run that saw them defeat defending champions Philosophy in match day one now comes to an end.
