The qualifiers of the Nigerian University games continued on Friday, with the University of Ibadan contingent maintaining their bullish form. They showed their desperation to make it to NUGA with excellent performances in various games.
However, it was essentially a day to forget for athletes from other schools.
In football, the male category team, UI pioneers topped the group after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over LAUTECH and clinched the sole qualification slot.
The basketball team (UI warriors) also qualified after beating Lead City 48-24.
In badminton, the female team qualified after defeating LAUTECH 2-0. LAUTECH would suffer more losses, as the handball team(UI handlers) also qualified after beating them (LAUTECH) 15-12.
The domineering spirit extended to other sports as UI athletes in Judo, Chess(team and singles), Tennis and Squash all qualified for the competition proper in UNILAG.
Taekwondo athletes were not left out, as ten(10) of them qualified for NUGA. In track & field, athletes in 100m, 200m, 800m, 3,000, 8,000m and 4×100m relay also qualified.
The Pre-NUGA competition continues today, as results are still expected from other sports, including Volleyball and table tennis.
