NEWS: UI GMO Holds Seminar on Sexual Harassment

The Gender Mainstreaming Office of the University of Ibadan held a Seminar on Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Gender-based violence on June 25, 2024 at the Students’ Representative Council Chambers.

The event which was coordinated by Professor Olapeju Aiyelaagbe, the head of the GMO had thirty-seven student participants as well as some student leaders.

Professor Aiyelaagbe, while speaking, emphasized on the school’s stance against sexual harassment, listing expulsion for students and dismissal for staff as some of the punitive measures taken against offenders. “Don’t be a perpetrator; report any act of sexual harassment you are aware of,” she enjoined the audience.

The Students’ Union President, Aweda Bolaji, also maintained the Union’s position in dealing with sexual harassment on campus. “Over the years, we’ve had this [sexual harassment policy] and people don’t know about it. They don’t know where to report sexual harassment cases. As part of our commitment, the SU wants to ensure that everyone is an ambassador in the fight against sexual harassment on campus,” he said.
