NEWS: UCJUI Partners AFYMP to Hold Journalism Workshop

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan, in partnership with Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) held a journalism workshop, friday, at Room A314, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan.

The workshop themed: “Mastering specialized beats in journalism” featured four guest speakers from across several beats in journalism who addressed campus journalists on how to master specialized beats in the profession.

Adedamola Oloyede, a broadcast journalist at WellsRadio, spoke on the need for campus journalists to master the beats which they’ve been asked to cover. “If you are a broadcast journalist looking to focus on Yoruba presentation, you need to master the language,” he said.

The second speaker, Faith Omoniyi, spoke on tech journalism and the various opportunities that abound in the niche. The tech cabal reporter encouraged campus journalists to read media platforms like Bloomberg and Tech Cabal to have a good understanding of what tech journalism entails.

The Nigerian Tribune Features editor, Paul Omoregbe spoke on finance journalism and the importance of the niche. The University of Ibadan alumnus admonished campus journalists to chase finance related stories and follow their passion for journalism.

Rounding up the speaking session, Fresh FM broadcast journalist, Adeola Bankole, spoke on her journey from undergraduate level where she studied Political science, to her interning phase and eventually gaining employment at Fresh FM.

At the end of the speaking session, campus journalists were given the opportunity to ask the speakers questions. The AFYMP E.D, Yinka Olaito, encouraged campus journalists to pursue investigative stories while also taking caution; buttressing that indeed “no story is bigger than a journalist’s life”

The African Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) is an organization that aims to support and empower young media professionals in Africa. Their mission is to promote excellence in journalism and media practice among young Africans, and to provide them with opportunities for training, networking, and professional development.
