POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT ORGANISES STRATEGIC LECTURE
The department of Political Science on Thursday, 6th November, 2014 organised a strategic lecture titled: ‘Curbing Insecurity in Nigeria’s Maritime Domain for National Development’, the programme which took place at the Large Lecture Theatre of Faculty of the Social Sciences is part of the activities marking the department’s golden jubilee. The lecture was strategically well delivered by Vice Admiral Usman O. Jibrin, Chief of the Naval Staff, Nigerian Navy who was ably represented.
The lecture revolves around various security challenges facing Nigeria’s maritime domain including illegal immigrants, terrorism, oil theft, sabotage, corruption among others. The Guest Lecturer emphasized the pivotal role of maritime to the national development of any nation of the world and hinted some of the challenges facing Nigerian Navy as including lack of power of prosecution. He admonished Nigerian universities to dedicate more researches to maritime and naval issues.
The lecture was graced with the presence of the university’s Vice Chancellor and the occasion’s Guest of Honour, Prof. Isaac Adewole ably represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Idowu Olayinka; the Chief Host as well as Dean of Faculty of the Social Sciences,Prof. O. A. Olutayo and the head of the hosts’ department, Prof. O. B. C. Nwolise.
VC WORSHIPS AT CENTRAL MOSQUE TO KICK – OFF 66TH CONVOCATION EXERCISE
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Isaac Folorunsho Adewole, joined the congregation to worship at the University central mosque on Friday 7th November, 2014 as part of the activities marking the University’s 66th convocation ceremony.
The Vice Chancellor, who was accompanied by other members of the University management team arrived at the central mosque during the sermon and joined the congregation to observe the Jumat service.
With the Vice Chancellor at the thanksgiving service, was Lt Gen (Rtd) AbdulRahman. B. Dambazau, former chief of Army staff who also paid a visit to the University Muslim Community.
UI SETS TO CELEBRATE SOYINKA AT 80
All plans have been set by management of University of Ibadan to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Kongi, Nigeria’s and indeed Africa’s first Nobel Prize winner for literature and an outstanding alumnus of the university, Prof. Oluwole Akinwande Soyinka who became an octogenarian on 13th July, 2014.
The line-up of events to celebrate the erudite scholar as published on the university’s web page are as follow: Wednesday, 12 November, 2014 “Children Reading Campaign with Wole Soyinka” organized by the Abadina Media Resource at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan by 3:00–5:00pm “An Evening of Reminiscences with Wole Soyinka” Venue: Arts Theatre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan Time 6pm.
UI ZOO HOLDS INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
The Zoological Garden of the University of Ibadan organized a 4-day International Training workshop on wildlife and Zoo management from Tuesday, 4th to Friday 7th November, 2014 at the Zoological Lecture theatre.
There were participants from zoos across the country such as Imo Zoo, Old Oyo National Park, Jos Wildlife Park, Abuja National park and other private zoos in the country. Lectures were delivered on various topics which includes ‘Setting up of a Zoo in the 21st century’, ‘Challenges of poaching in the 21st century’, ‘Safety procedures and handling emergencies’, ‘Capture, restraining and transport of animals’ among others.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole opened the workshop on the 1st day and was at the closing ceremony. Also with him were, Prof Aiyelari, DVC Admin, Olujimi Olukoya, Registrar, Dean Faculty of Science and other principal officers. Certificates were presented to the participant by the Vice Chancellor at the closing ceremony. Also, an association for the zoos in the country was also formed.
BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE AFFAIRS OF YOUR COUNTRY— Olusegun Adeniyi
The Department of Guidance and Counselling, Faculty of Education held a personality lecture on Thursday 6th of Nov,2014 at the Faculty’s Large Lecture Theatre.
The guest speaker, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi , who was the special adviser to the late President Yar’dua on media and Publicity and the current Editor -in – Chief of This Day newspaper spoke on the topic “Expectations and roles of Nigerian Students”. He spoke on the topic in relation to the upcoming 2015 general elections.
He started by asking the Students a rhetorical question; if they desire to go to the election as blind citizens? He was able to address the issue of nonchalance among students towards the affairs of the country. He stated that if those who are literate are not concerned about the state of the country, how can we expect improvement. He also noted that this age where our political representatives do not think they are accountable to us, if educated individuals were more interested in the affairs of the country, there would be a positive change. For this change to occur, it is important that students participate in the coming election by voting in those whose manifestoes are achievable and not those who engage in “sophistry”
Other prominent members of the society were also present at the programme. The like of Mrs Oluwatosin who is the current manager of Ecobank, Prof.Jonathan Ozuki, Dr.Owodunni, Hon. Benga Adewusi.
Mrs Oluwatosin who was the chairman of the occasion, implored the students to have what is called “emotional bank account” which as to do with debit and credit. This is evidence in the way they relate with people, they will either be a debit or a credit to people they involve with. So, it is better to be watchful.
