Covenant Odedele and Ayomide Oluwole (Sanjay), two front-running candidates in the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI SU) presidential election, have promised to establish a Student Welfare Board (SWB) if elected.
Speaking at the UI SU Press Night and Presidential Debate, both aspirants assured students that the board would address pressing welfare issues, including financial aid, accommodation challenges, and other student-related concerns.
When asked about their plans for the board, Covenant Odedele said, “We will collate a report, submit it, and we will find solutions to the problems in the school populace.”
The Student Welfare Board, as outlined in the university’s structure, is responsible for organizing, controlling, and supervising all matters related to student welfare on behalf of the Senate. Its functions include overseeing halls of residence, ensuring the well-being of students, and regulating student conduct. The board comprises representatives from the student body, university management, and other stakeholders.
However, previous agitation of this board lead to the disbandment of the students Union in 2016 that lead to the disbandment of the union under Ojo Aderemi, following disagreements with the university management.
