After three months of battle of words and wits, Faculty of Clinical Sciences and Kuti Hall have emerged winners of this year’s JawWar in the faculty and hall categories respectively.
Clinical science was crowned champion after dispatching Faculty of Law while Kuti Hall pipped Sultan Bello Hall in the keenly contested debate.
The final, held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan, began with the Rookie Oratory Contest where five rookies took to the podium to speak on the topic, “Is transformation possible in Nigeria?” While the award for the Rookie of the year went to Abiodun Oluwadamilola, the best Rookie for the day went to Asundemade Habeebulah from Nnamdi Azikwe Hall.
Moving on, in the debate between Faculty of Clinical sciences and Faculty of Law, “Solution to Nigeria’s problem: revolution or transformation” was the topic and Clinical sciences’ point of 77.17 was too much for Law’s 74.66.
In halls category, Sultan Bello Hall and Kuti Hall slugged it out on the topic, “Nigeria’s priority, corruption reduction or economic development”. Kuti however denied Bello their first trophy in their third attempt in a Jaw War Final pipping them by 81.0 to 79.0.
Dignitaries in attendance were: the Vice Chancellor, Prof Abel Idowu Olayinka, Former Dean of Students who is also the Chairman, Council Committee on Security, Professor A.R.A Alada, Director of Public Communication, Mr O.M. Oladejo, Deputy Dean of students, Dr. A. Abiona, Dr. Demola Lewis, Mr. Tijani ‘Mayowa, Mr. Fidelis Bonaventure among others.
However, the anthology of speeches edited by Adekunle Adebajo was projected and donations were demanded from members on the high table and students for the completion of the publication. The anthology, said to be a compendium of intellectual of progenies of present and past UItes delivered in and out of the school, was said to contain 64 speeches from 31 speakers.
In the end, various individual awards were presented to outstanding individuals and the trophies were presented to the winners.
The President of the University of Ibadan Central Literary and Debating Society, Miss Tomisori Catherine, delivered the vote of thanks as she appreciated the effort of Uites which has made the competition a success. She commended members of her team for the good job done. She appreciated the School Management, Dr. Demola Lewis, Senators of the Society, the speakers and others at the event.
