JUST IN: SU AGS, Mojuba To Undergo Community Service For Overspending Approved Budget

The University of Ibadan Student’s Representative Council has agreed during its ongoing sitting that the Student’s Union Assistant General Secretary, Olamilekan Adeniyi ‘Mojuba’ undergo community service for incurring over N300,000 expenses during the Student’s Union Fresher’s welcome programme.

While giving a report of the event, Hon. Lateef Anifowoshe, Chairman of the House committee on Project and Event Monitoring said out of the 1.7 million approved for the event, out of which N500,000 came for the Union’s account, 1.4 million was spent and there was a deficit of 323,00.

Hon Anifowoshe noted that while the Assistant General Secretary was proactive and dedicated to his duty during the event as monitored by the committee, he should have stuck to the amount approved by the house or notify the house if it will not be enough.

Defending himself, Mojuba cited disappointment by sponsors as the reason for overspending the approved amount. He also noted how he used his personal money to carry out some activities during the week.

The speaker, Rt. Hon Olamide, however, noted that there should be some punishment meted out against the AGS for overspending the amount approved by the house. The house voted on recommendations proposed by the house concerning the punitive measure.

The motions are: (I) The sum of 149,300, which is the overspent amount should be subtracted from the amount approved for miscellaneous which is 81,770 and the 67,530 remaining should be paid by the AGS, while, the SU executive sort the rest and the AGS to write a letter of apology to the house. (ii) The Union to pay the deficit of 323,000 and the AGS to undergo a community service.

Fourteen (14) honourables voted for the adoption of the first motion while 36 (thirty-six) honourables voted for the second motion after which the house adopted the motion.

The issue was further referred to the House disciplinary committee to determine the form the community service will take.
