JUST IN: SU Acknowledges 250 Signatories, Postpone Congress Amid National Unrest

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union has officially confirmed the receipt of 250 signatories calling for a congress, in accordance with the constitution’s Article XIII(2).

The confirmation was made through a letter signed by Aweda Bolaji, the President, and Ogundijo Dolapo Japheth, the General Secretary, of the Students’ Union.

According to the letter, the Union recognizes the urgent demand for a congress but has decided to temporarily postpone the meeting due to the ongoing national unrest caused by widespread protests across the country.

The constitution stipulates that the President, upon receiving 250 signatories from students, shall direct the General Secretary to summon the Congress. However, given the current volatile situation, the Union has now delayed the congress to ensure the safety and well-being of the students that would be in attendance.

“The Union confirms receipt of 250 signatories calling for congress, as stipulated by the constitution in Article XIII(2); ‘The President, on the receipt of 250 signatories of the students, shall direct the General Secretary to summon the Congress.”

“However, we recognize the current national unrest due to protests across the country, and therefore, the congress is temporarily laid on the table.”

The letter also assures students that the date for the congress will be announced as soon as normalcy returns to the country. The Union is urging all students to remain safe during this period of unrest and is committed to holding the congress once conditions stabilize.
