The Sigma Club, University of Ibadan, held the second edition of its charity event at the University Health Services (Jaja Clinic) on Friday, December 20, 2024. The initiative, aimed at improving the clinic’s facilities, underscores the club’s commitment to student welfare and philanthropy.

Speaking during the event, the Assistant Director of Jaja Clinic, representing Dr. Aderonke Ajav, commended the Sigma Club for its generosity. While extending the heartfelt appreciation of the clinic’s director, she also acknowledged the support of the Student Union executives, stating, “None of these things could have been done without your collaboration,” she said urging for continued support.

“As the proverbial Oliver Twist will always ask for more, we ask for more of your assistance,” she added.

In an interview with UCJUI, the Sigma Chief highlighted that the charity event aligns with the club’s legacy of impacting lives for over seven decades. “This is not the first time we are giving donations to Jaja. If you go inside, some of the chairs have stickers with ‘Sigma Club’ written on them,” he said.

He further noted that past charity events included donations to the Agodi Correctional Centre and Mokola underbridge, where food and clothes were distributed to the needy.

The Sigma Chief also detailed other notable initiatives, such as public lectures and the Sigma Health Outreach, which provides quality healthcare to rural communities. Reflecting on this year’s outreach at Ijaye village, he said, “A lot of doctors as well as health items were donated to take care of the people.”

When asked about the decision to support Jaja Clinic, he emphasized the club’s philosophy of prioritizing the home community. “Jaja is the first and only recognized healthcare clinic for UI students. As we all know, charity begins at home,” he remarked.

A survey conducted by the club identified essential items such as beds, pillows, fans, and a fridge. While most of the items were donated, financial constraints delayed the provision of the fridge.

He assured that plans were in place to secure it and explore further collaboration with the clinic.

The Sigma Club, established in 1950, remains a cornerstone of integrity and selflessness within the university. The Sigma Chief attributed its sustained legacy to these core values, noting that the club operates without a formal constitution. “One thing every member of this club knows and says is that the Sigma Chief is the Sigma Club,” he affirmed.
