The Law Students Society (LSS) of the University of Ibadan has issued a formal apology to the Kegites Club of Nigeria following concerns raised about a recent publication by the LSS Ethics and Litigation Department.
In a letter addressed to the national headquarters of the Kegites Club, the LSS clarified its intentions and reaffirmed respect for the club’s values and contributions.
The issue arose after a December 11, 2024, release by the Kegites Club titled “Rejoinder to the Law Students Society: Setting the Record Straight,” which alleged defamation and misrepresentation. The publication in question reportedly referenced the club in an example aimed at emphasizing adherence to ethical standards outlined in the LSS Code of Conduct, specifically discouraging activities that promote alcohol consumption, such as drinking competitions.

In the apology letter signed by LSS President Idowu Ademola Faith, the society stated, “Our intention was never to denigrate or misrepresent the esteemed Kegites Club of Nigeria… The example involving your club was cited purely to provide context and emphasis, not to impugn your values or reputation.”
The LSS also addressed claims regarding an alleged unconstitutional provision in its constitution that purportedly restricted law students from joining the Kegites Club. Following a review, the LSS clarified that no such restriction exists, reaffirming the society’s stance on individual freedom and adherence to university regulations.
To resolve the misunderstanding, the LSS proposed an open dialogue with the Kegites Club to strengthen their relationship and prevent future misinterpretations. The letter concluded with a commitment to mutual respect and constructive collaboration between both organizations.
