As an Independently Organized Event, TEDxUI held today, Saturday 11th of January, 2025 at KAAF Auditorium, Department of Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan.
The program themed “Momentum” started with the host, Wuraola Olagoke welcoming people and the opening address by the liscencee, Hikmat Opeyemi.
Immediately after the welcoming speech, the TedxUI, kick-started with a speech by Nnanu Alu, Co-founder of OfficeAjo Tech limited whose speech was on “Setting the stage for networking success”.
After his speech, Omodeni Jumoke Mujidat, the second speaker, gave a Ted talk on giving back to mother earth. In her words, “Mother nature has given out a lot, therefore, we have to give back to mother nature.
The President and Co-founder of Toolbox, Ayoola Dominic, gave an overview on toolbox and refrigerator and the first session was brought to an end.
After the first session, break out session began with the attendees going into different classes. This session lasted for a few minutes and the Pneuma came up to give a musical rendition.
Afterwards, Bright Sekoni, CEO Audacia Properties spoke on “The Power of Starting: How small steps create big changes” where he emphasized the need to “just start”, without giving excuses. He also explained the reasons why people don’t start.
Michael Adelakun (Lumee and Olóòtú Agbá), a storyteller and content creator, shared a story of the tortoise with a seed that grew into a plant. In his words, “talent when nurtured with care brings out wonder”
Afterwards, the representatives from Chess in Slums Africa, Niniola Jamiu and Makinde Elizabeth came up to speak on momentum. Each of them told their stories weaving moral lessons on pushing forward no matter the circumstances because momentum is important.
After a giveaway session, the next speaker, Precious Ibeh, a brand strategist and a graduate of the University of Ibadan delivered a speech on the topic “Everyone is a public speaker”. Using his own story, he gave five steps to become a very good speaker which were, learn to embrace imperfections, keep practicing, keep pursuing knowledge, knowledge your audience, do not just speak – connect.
Afterwards, a play was presented by Waheed Ishola Orolabi. The play titled “Bribeprice” engaged the audience and spoke on child marriage in Nigeria and its consequences.
Next, the CEO of the African Institute of Technology and Innovation, Monsur Olaniyan spoke on people’s reaction to challenging situations while having goals at heart. He put the reactions into three groups, the drifters, the settlers and the goal getters and made the attendees understand that their reactions can make or mar their lives.
The final speaker, Mr. Wadud, spoke on the reduction of environmental pollution and the use of charcoal for art.
To bring the program to an end, a spoken word performance, rendered by Oluwabukunmi Amoo titled “Welcome to the world” was given.
To end the event, the liscencee, Hikmat Opeyemi gave a closing remark thanking all the volunteers who took their time to plan this event and everyone who attended the event
