In a meeting between The Literary and Debating Society (TLDS), UI and the Union of Campus Journalists, UI (UCJ UI) on Sunday, the President of The Literary and Debating Society, Ayeni Otitojesu gave reasons behind the exclusion of logic in the upcoming Jawwar score sheet.
Otitojesu explained that logic is synonymous to persuasiveness as the latter includes analogy, logic, aphorisms and syllogism. Therefore, it is repetitive to assign different scores for logic and persuasiveness.
“Logic is not separate from persuasiveness because logic is a way of persuading your listeners. Persuasiveness include logic, analogy, aphorisms and syllogisms. Another component that make persuasiveness sweet is punchline too, it is one thing to have contents and fact and it is another thing to drive home that fact in a way that convinces.” he explained
While explaining the reason behind the frequent use of jabs at the last Jawwar, he said that delivery, persuasiveness and expression were included in the last judging criteria. That expression is part of delivery and both cannot be judged separately, he explained.
“The speakers had to look at throwing of jabs and expressions. But we are not putting expression this time around, anything expression should come under delivery.” Otitojesu said.
The judging criteria for the upcoming Jawwar include appearance, delivery, content and fact, persuasiveness, refutations, rebuttals, timing, structure, and organization.
Jawwar is set to begin on Wednesday, September 29 with the faculty rounds.
