The Royal Quiz Club of the University of Ibadan Medical Students’ Association (UIMSA) emerged as the winner of the Biennial Emeritus Prof. O.O. Akinkugbe National Inter-Medical School Quiz Competition on Saturday, 14th March 2026, at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
The competition, hosted by the DOKITA Editorial Board, was slated to begin at 10am but started about 40 minutes later. UIMSA defeated Olabisi Onabanjo University Medical Students’ Association (OOUMSA) and the Association of Medical Students, University of Lagos (AMSUL) which were the other two competing schools to secure the top prize of ₦300,000. The contest tested participants across Clinical Sciences, Basic Medical Sciences, General Sciences, Mathematics & Logic, and General Knowledge.
Although OOUMSA led the medical rounds with the highest scores in Clinical Sciences (42 points) and Basic Medical Sciences (40 points) and UIMSA fell behind due to a controversy in a correct answer given, UIMSA dominated the non-medical segments, scoring strongly in Mathematics & Logic, General Sciences and General Knowledge to clinch victory with a total of 142 points. OOUMSA finished second with 124 points, while AMSUL placed third with 105 points.
UIMSA received ₦300,000 and a plaque of excellence, while OOUMSA and AMSUL were awarded ₦200,000 and ₦150,000 respectively, alongside plaques and certificates.
Speaking after the contest, UIMSA team Captain and RQC president, Mbaonu Daniels said the team relied on preparation and strategy to stage a comeback.
“A lot of preparations have been put in place since last year to be able to put up a fight in the finals this year. UIMSA, irrespective of being somewhat of the host school, had to earn its place in the final round of this competition and participated in the gruelling qualifiers and knockouts over many months. The competition was a true test of resilience, and we’re proud to win the top prize and also win the hearts of UIMSAites again.”
A spectator from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ilaka Saheed, described the competition as engaging.
“It was honestly an exciting atmosphere. The organisers tried as much as possible to make the start of the quiz as interactive as possible and generally, it was a fun and relatable experience with the questions asked. The atmosphere was tense and the questions were being answered quickly in the earlier sections until the general knowledge section where the vibe was calmer and the participants were almost shocked that there were also questions relating to DOKITA.”
The Editor-in-Chief of the DOKITA Editorial Board, Mong U. Victor, noted that the competition featured medical schools from across the country, with 32 institutions initially invited for the competition, and 12 participating in the preliminary stage.
It was indeed an amazing experience. 4 schools made it to the finals, but for security reasons, the fourth school, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, couldn’t attend, even though all the logistics as regards their comfortable stay had been catered for. My appreciation goes to the Akinkugbe family for their constant support for medical students across the nation to participate in an event like this to boost their wits and to fight collectively for a purpose.”
After the presentation of awards and certificates, the event ended at 2pm. The Akinkugbe National Quiz Competition honours the late Emeritus Professor O.O. Akinkugbe and aims to promote intellectual excellence among medical students nationwide.
