I LOST HIM

“Dad,be patient,i will be late for my interview”

Mart blurted out already frustrated by his father who was occupying the full view of the mirror.

“If you had made good grades in school and gotten a job,you would have made enough money to buy a mirror or even get yourself a house”

Rufus gave a mock response

Mart, looking beaten hung his tie around his neck,he took his satchel from where he had lazily flung it a night before, coming from a futile interview and dashed out of the house.

There were wispy clouds, not the serious kind that would bring a soaking rain to the parched land , but enough to splinter the rays of light into glorious colour.Kids were running to catch the school bus, business men and women walked briskly to the train station.

Mart had walked past the officers quarters before remembered that he was too angry to collect transport fare from his father,

“Its him again”one of the group of girls that stood at the bus station pointed at him and the rest burst into laughter

“So have you found a job now?”

“No,still searching for one” he hid his embarassed face behind a smile

A bus came to an halt at the station with a honk

“Bye,Mr.jobless dudy” one waved as she got into the bus.

Mart expected nothing less from the girls;he has been searching for the job since they were in grade one,and they were in their third grade. One of of them lived in the same neighbourhood as Mart ,she was the head of their gossip team and ensured that she fed her mates with everything going on in the neighbourhood including Martins jobless life.Three futile years.

“….you are not being efficient enough,if we cannot meet our target we will be left behind in the stockmarket. The total expenditure was more than income, according to last month’s account review!”

The conference room held a cloud of intense silence as the bossy head in a black and white suit angrily adressed his workers.

“The company lost about ten point five million naira last month, now tell me who will pay for this?”

He turned to look at the over one hundred workers as if he was expecting an answer from them

“nobody! look,if you’re not ready to work proficciently then get your lazy ass to sit in your house,i ain’t ready to pay figure heads and zombie workers”

He brought out a folded white handkerchief from his trouser pocket and wiped his face

“Miss Priscillia, see me in my office.Meeting dismissed”

******

“Miss Priscillia,i know you to be one of my most competent workers.Unfortunately the loss that the Company suffered was traceable to your department, having been the best head of department that the company has produced i expect more from you”

He scrutinized her with his bulgy white eyeballs and when she was unable to produce an explanation, he hit the table in anger

“Mol Resorttieur is going down and if Mol Resorttieur goes down it definitely means that you are going down! do you want that to happen?”

“Not at all sir” she gave a sharp nod

“I  ….. we need more workers,we are understaffed. The workload is higher in proprtion to the staffs”

She managed to say

“HMMMN…understaffed you say. There will be recruitment then”.
