NEVER MISS YOUR BREAKFAST

Driving your car on an empty tank will not get you very far and neither will your body, if you don’t fuel it! Most of us attend our morning lectures on empty stomach because we woke up late, we didn’t plan on taking breakfast before leaving our various rooms, which make us eat in afternoon or probably in the evening at the end of lecture.  Due to this reason, I am not surprised when people say they have ulcer bite or ulcer attack as they call it. Many of us don’t even know the benefits of breakfast, some people think it is just a mere meal, but it is more than that. Breakfast reduces the feeling of hunger and cravings throughout the day so you are less likely to make unhealthy food choices. In this week’s edition of health talk, I will be discussing reasons you should take breakfast and other things you can take in replacement of breakfast.

The reasons you should take healthy breakfast before leaving your room are;

  • Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It provides you with the energy and nutrients that lead to increased concentration in the classroom. Students who skip breakfasts tend to lose concentration while lectures are going on, because their brain didn’t have the required nutrients to function properly. It improves concentration, performance and general cognitive function.
  • Studies show that breakfast helps in maintaining healthy body weight.
  • Hunger sets in long before it’s time for lunch, but because it’s not convenient to eat properly, many people who do not eat breakfast, feed on snacks or junks that are high in fat and sugar. As matter of fact, too much of sugar and fat is not good for the body.
  • People who skip breakfast are unlikely to make up their daily requirement for some vitamins and minerals that a simple breakfast would have provided. It maintains normal metabolic function and a higher metabolic rate throughout the day.
  • Breakfast provides energy for the activities during the morning and helps to prevent mid-morning slump.
  • It regulates our blood glucose levels, and also protects against diabetes.

 

TIPS ON EATING A QUICK AND HEALTHY BREAKFAST:

  • Pick 2-3 foods, including at least one from each of the following food groups:

–         Bread and grain (i.e. cereal or toast bread)

–         Milk and milk product ( i.e. low-fat yogurt and milk)

–         Fruit or vegetable group (i.e. bananas, apples , carrots)

  • Replace or accompany that morning cup of coffee with a glass of orange juice with an egg. Egg has nutrients to sustain you for some time.
  • You can take fruits before leaving your room in the morning. Eating fruits on empty before meal helps the body to absorb all the necessary and essential nutrients that are present in the fruits.
  • Make an Omelette; take it alongside Bread and Tea. You can also prepare Noodles, Spaghetti or macaroni. The above are fast foods that won’t take your time, and they won’t stress you.

Plan to eat breakfast. This means you should decide what you are going to eat for breakfast before the next morning. You can save time by putting out the box of cereal (Golden morn, oatmeal, cornflakes and the likes) or cutting up some fruit the night before. I see no reason why you should still skip breakfast with all the above reason and ways of taking breakfast.
