Five days after Students’ Union Executive Council sent a letter to the Students’ Representative Council requesting approval to hold a Congress, the SRC is yet to give a response or call a sitting.

The Student Union Executive Council earlier this week had sent a letter addressed to the SRC, requesting the approval of a Congress which should be held on Saturday 13th of September 2025 which is 7 days from today.

However, this letter has been met with silence from the SRC.

According to Article XIII of the Students’ Union Constitution, “Congress shall be summoned by the Chairman on the approval of the Council. The President, on the receipt of 250 signatories of the students, shall direct the General Secretary to summon the Congress.”

“Congress shall also be summoned by a resolution of Council. 4. Congress shall meet at least once in an academic year.”

The same article also dictates that Congress shall be held at least once in an academic year.

It is important to note that despite various pressing issues faced by students, a Congress has not been held this session.

During the course of the first semester a Congress was called but was not held as the Union’s executive council as well as the SRC failed to adequately cater for mobilisation of students.

Whether a congress will be held or not is yet to be confirmed as the SRC is yet to provide a response to the letter addressed to them.

Following their prolonged silence, the press reached out to the Speaker of the SRC, Mr. Shoge to get a comment as to why nothing as been done regarding the letter however, as at press time, the speaker is yet to give a response.
