FEES HIKE: UI SRC Reject Planned Basic Dues Increment

By: Akanni Oluwasegun Micheal

The University of Ibadan Students Representative Council (SRC) has rejected a proposal from the Council of Faculty Presidents and Hall Chairpersons seeking to increase the basic dues amount from N3000 to N4000 during its first emergency meeting on Saturday.

This proposal was rejected by honorable members after several hours of debate on the grounds that approving the increment would not be fair on the part of students who are already overburdened by the economic reality and recent fees hike announced by the management of the institution.

“If we accept this proposal, we have defected our argument to the school management on a hike in fees. They should not increase the basic dues,” one honorable member stated.

A motion to increase the dues to N3,500 garnered only 15 votes while the motion to maintain the status quo moved by Hon. Asiwaju Babatimeyin Peace won with 33 votes.

Meanwhile, in defense, the Chairman of Hall Chairpersons, Mr. Olaniyan Ibrahim and the Acting Chairman of the Council of Faculty Presidents, Mr. Adeniyi Olamilekan Mojuba both argued that the increment was necessary considering the need to maintain quality in providing students welfarism, a stance that the house disregarded.
