On Saturday, 14th March 2026, the President of the Department of Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Studies Students’ Association (DEPSHSSA), University of Ibadan, Abeeb Wale Azeez, applauded the department, bodies, and committees for the successful conduct of the 2026 Induction Ceremony and Capacity Building Workshop.
In his closing remarks at the 2026 Induction Ceremony for students of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice Department of Peace, Security and Humanitarian Studies (DEPSHS), Postgraduate College, University of Ibadan, he described the successful induction of students into the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP) as a historic milestone and a significant step in preparing emerging peace practitioners for professional engagement in the peace and security sector.
Speaking on the achievement of the administration, he emphasised that leadership and achievement should be measured by the ability to meet the needs and expectations of the people being served. In his words, “achievement, to me, is defined by the ability to meet the needs of the students that gave us the mandate. The satisfaction that comes from fulfilling that responsibility is far greater than anything else. As President, I believe I am simply performing the constitutional responsibilities entrusted to me when I accepted the mandate to serve”.
Furthermore, the induction ceremony also marked the successful completion of a one-week-long capacity-building workshop organised for the students by the University of Ibadan Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS) and the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Security Management (TECESM) in collaboration with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP).
The workshop, facilitated from Monday, 9th March 2026, to Saturday, 14th March, 2026, brought together experienced facilitators and professionals who shared practical insights drawn from real-life experiences in the fields of peacebuilding, security management, humanitarian response, and conflict resolution.
Throughout the week-long workshop, participants engaged in robust and interactive sessions that exposed them to practical scenarios within the peace and security ecosystem. Also, facilitators shared professional encounters from the field, highlighting the realities, challenges, and ethical responsibilities involved in peace practice.
Students were also engaged in simulation exercises, role plays, and group discussions, allowing them to practically explore how peace architects manage conflicts, overcome operational challenges, and navigate complex social and institutional issues.
Furthermore, a major highlight of the event was the induction of the entire set into full membership of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSS), a feat which has not been achieved by previous sets. On this, the President of the Department of Peace, Security and Humanitarian Studies Students’ Association (DEPSHSSA), Abeeb Wale, Azeez, therefore commended the departmental management, SPSS body, facilitators, organising committees, and all sub-committees whose collective efforts ensured the successful execution of both the capacity-building workshop and the induction ceremony.
He also appreciated the dedication and enthusiasm of students who participated actively throughout the program, noting that their engagement reflects the professionalism and commitment expected of members of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice, and all the awardees’ efforts were recognised for their deserving award
In his final charge, AZEEZ Abeeb Wale encouraged all newly inducted members to maintain the professional networks and relationships formed during the program.
He urged them to stay connected, continue sharing opportunities, support one another, and remain proud ambassadors of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice as they step into broader professional spaces. In his words, “as we move forward into the global stage, let us continue to strengthen the bonds we have formed here. Let us keep in touch with the contacts we have made, share opportunities among ourselves, and identify proudly with the Society for Peace Studies and Practice. Together, we can explore greater possibilities, contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding efforts, and make a lasting impact in our communities and across the world”.
