If the alleged police brutality continues and the youth continue to be victims, what will be the hope of our country’s tomorrow? We need a total re-examination of the stalemate that has been witnessed for some days, a legitimate reform with evidence. Thorough insightful and thought-provoking discourse on this trending issue gives the echo of the thoughts of our concerned citizens. For some Nigerians and even non-Nigerians to be pursuing this cause stress the beauty of unity in diversity.
Talking about reforms, it is an asset to the country to have a team of well trained personnel that undergo rigorous evaluation, psychological and emotional intelligence, as well as effective communication training. These are attributes which Nigerians are capable of imbibing as they are reputed to excel in external assignments. So, what’s the problem?
We need assurance that the people tasked to protect lives and properties do so happily and are reciprocally appreciated. Training, development and education on communication skills will go a long way in establishing and maintaining good relations between officers and citizens. Positive motivators should also be put in place. Passion! This is one major quality that should be present in every officer, dedicated and driven to serve the country.
These reforms are necessary. They will create an environment for a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship between law enforcement officials and the citizenry.
