Campus Security Alert: Council of Defence Ministers Alerts Students of Suspicious Activity

By Ibrahim Taiwo, Usman

The Council of Defence Ministers, an arm of the Campus Defenders within the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, has raised an alert regarding suspicious activity reportedly occurring on campus.

As the first week of physical resumption ended Friday, 6th of March, 2026, the Council raised an alert that there have been reports of individuals approaching students and asking for “help” with simple phone-related tasks such as reading words aloud into their phone, filling a form on their devices, typing messages or briefly handling their phones.

The alert added that, while such activities may appear harmless, they may be an attempt to capture Students’ biometric information, including voice recordings, facial recognition data, or fingerprints, which could potentially be misused for impersonation or fraudulent financial activities, such as unauthorised access to financial applications.

Hence, students are strongly advised to avoid speaking into or handling phones belonging to strangers, be cautious of anyone requesting voice recordings or assistance with their device and politely decline and move away if approached under such circumstances

The alert advised students to report any suspicious activity to the appropriate campus security authorities
