by Ibrahim Taiwo Usman

Two honourable members and a student, Hon. Segun, Hon. Shalom and Miss Nice Linus have been sanctioned during the 8th Emergency Plenary Meeting of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Students’ Representative Council (UISU SRC), which was held today, Saturday, 8th of November 2025 at the Student Representative Chamber, Kunle Adepeju Building, Students Union Building (SUB).

The trio were sanctioned following the decision of the house in passing a resolution made by the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Disciplinary Committee in a report dated 27th of August, 2025.

According to the report, the cases addressed by the Disciplinary Committee include “Case 1”, which was between the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Executive Council versus Hon. Segun, Hon. Shalom, and Miss Nice Linus.

The case originated from a formal report on harassment of members of the Students’ Union Executive Council on the 15th of May 2025 at the SUB by the three Honourable.

The findings of the Disciplinary Committee, according to the committee report, uncovered that Hon. Segun and the other two were found guilty. Hon. Segun was found guilty of attempting to enforce the SRC’s decisions through self-help and undue coercion, Hon. Shalom was found to have ignored all the communications and failed to appear before the committee without justification, Miss Nice Linus was found to have failed to appear before the Committee after due invitation and had continued to challenge the jurisdiction of the Committee despite clarification.

The decisions of the Disciplinary Committee include a warning to Hon. Segun against such conduct in future and directing him to tender a written apology through the Office of the Speaker to the Executive Council. Also, in line with Article 27, Section E, Paragraph (d) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution, Hon. Shalom was suspended from the SRC until she appears before or communicates with the Committee. Then, Miss. Linus, in line with Article 27, Section E, Paragraph (f) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution, will possibly be referred to the University Authorities through the Dean of Students.

When the Committee Chairman, Hon. Olanrewaju Basit, was questioned on why Hon Linus and Hon. Shalom received different resolutions regarding that their Non-appearance or Contempt of the Committee is similar, the Committee Chairman answered that the suspension of Hon. Shalom is not just an arbitrary decision of the Committee, but based on Article 27, Section E, Paragraph (d) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution.

While, since Miss Linus is not yet considered a member of the SRC as it stands, suspending her is not a provision in the constitution since she is not yet a member of the SRC. Hence, the only constitutional provision that can be melted as a sanction on her is the provision of Article 27, Section E, Paragraph (f) of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union Constitution, which gives the committee the decision to refer an erring member, to the University Authorities through the Dean of Students.
