Stereotypes have been tagged with some anomalies with the core of it being that they give a distorted and negative view about a subject matter. However, many people will nevertheless accede to the fact that they are still truth-bearers (although it may be used for some bias purposes). One of such stereotype is that “politicians are deceitful” that is, they seek positions for the sake of their belly not service. This view may be a prejudice from non-politicians and the people alike, yet, it is substantial. This is because politicians- most especially those from the national scene- are known to be extortionate and swindlers. They turn beggars when they seek for positions and when they get it they become something else.
Right from the national government down to the lowest form of politics the mind can grapple with the fact that there has been innumerable cases of deceit and misuse of power. Workers are owed the salaries of many months but their representatives are lavishing in the wealth of the country because their salaries and allowances are always paid as at when due. The workers are suffering, the pensioners dying but the representatives basking in the people’s wealth.
There was the clamour for change from the great people of Nigeria after they have endured a traumatic tenure under a so-called PhD. Holder with the economy running down the drain. The change eventually came but it was not what was anticipated for. It was from bad to worse. Several cases of threats and vices; the Niger-Delta Avengers planning secession on the 1st of October; the Boko-Haram wreaking havoc; the Fulani herdsmen increasing the death toll; vandals on the verge of totally collapsing the economy and the economy itself pitiful. This is not our ‘CHANGE’.
This WARNING is coming at this time because while the national and state political theatrics is going haywire, the politics on campus is nonetheless a protégé of the former. This is the second semester; the perfect time for faculty, departmental and hall elections, politicians are already roaming about, greeting you here and there, being so respectful and humble to the core, in fact they turn beggars before they emerge as winners. After their emergence they ‘show their real face’ and portray who they really are- extortionists and swindlers. BEWARE of these beggars and their deceit; else, they flatter you into the ditch!
