ASUU Strike: Student Union Leaders Hold Meeting, Suggest Nationwide Agitation

The Association of Student Union Leaders on Saturday 7th of November 2020 held a virtual meeting to discuss the ongoing ASUU strike and the possible ways forward.

The meeting which started by 4:40pm was hosted by Mr. Akeju Olusegun, the President of the University of Ibadan Students Union.

Speaking on why he convened the meeting Mr. Akeju Olusegun said “we cannot just sit back and relax while the students waste their time at home. The meeting is aimed at reaching consensus on major decisions that will facilitate a smoother tertiary education for the students.”

The following suggestions were raised during the meeting: “An online and offline nationwide agitation by the Student leaders along with students from their individual schools, a meeting with ASUU stakeholders to plan a nationwide agitation in conjunction with ASUU members, writing direct letters to the Federal government of the country on the demands of the students as regards the strike.”

“An open letter to the Federal government of Nigeria, with a 5 day ultimatum to resolve the ASUU strike, a meeting with the members of the National assembly as regards the feasible solutions to the ongoing strike and possible recurrence, protests at Major government buildings at the country’s capital to be carried out by the Student union leaders.”

The meeting which ended by 6:40pm had no definite resolution. However, the Students Union Leaders agreed on: “holding a protest to show displeasure at the ASUU strike, and a Press conference on the 12th of November 2020 by 10am to make the next line of action known to the government and the general public.”

The Students Union leaders promised to take the best decision that would not only put an end to the ongoing strike but also prevent future recurrence. Present at the meeting were Mr. Wisdom Okoro, the President of the University of Ilorin Students Union, Mr. Soneye Abdul-Azeez, the Student Union’s President of Tai Solarin University of Education, Mr. Oloyede Michael, the Students Union’s President of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta among other individuals
