“This is a progressive development…I commend the Management on this” – Onifade Bello, Speaker, SRC

The University of Ibadan has centralised the procedure for clearance of students graduating in the 2015/2016 academic session.

This is contained in an internal memorandum dated 15th of December, 2016 signed by the Deputy Registrar (Students), Dr. F.I Etadon to the various unit heads in the University community including the Welfare Officer, Lodgings Officer, Heads of Department, Deans of Faculties, Hall wardens, Bursar, Librarian, Directors of Works, University Health Service  and Sports.

The document obtained by UCJUI from sources close to the Student Affairs Division stated that the practice of subjecting graduating students to “old and rigorous clearance procedures had since been abrogated in the 2013/2014 academic session.

To this end, I have the directive of the Dean of Students to bring the attached (still subsists till date) to your attention again.” It added.

The move to centralise the clearance procedure for graduating students started during the 2013/2014 academic session when Prof. Idowu Olayinka was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). In the declaratory internal memorandum signed by him titled “Revised Procedure for Clearance of Graduating Students” and dated 11th of November, 2014, he directed that the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has approved for immediate implementation of the new procedure.

He further stated that the Clearance process would no more involve all students, particularly those who have nothing to clear as it would be assumed that all graduating students are cleared except they have issues. According to him, “the clearance process would henceforth be initiated by the Students Affairs office with the issuance of a notice every semester to all necessary units of the University for submission of a list of students with pending matters for which clearance is required.

Arising from the above, notices would also be forwarded to the individual defaulting students who require to process a clearance, to do so and tender an evidence of compliance at the Students Affairs Office within a stipulated  period” He concluded.

While chatting with UCJUI this morning, the Speaker of the Students’ Representatives Council, Mr. Onifade Bello said that this is a progressive development from the University management. According to him, “This is what we have been fighting for and we are extremely happy this is coming now.  This will no doubt go a long way to facilitate the clearance process of our final year students. I commend the Management on this and I would like to enjoin those in the know to inform others as well; in order to ease them of the stress of going from one unit to another.”

Since the news was earlier reported, many students have expressed their happiness at the new development as it would save them stress, time and the burden of paying “tips” to the staff at various clearance units.

A student who spoke with UCJUI under the condition of anonymity submitted that “This is the only reasonable policy UI has done in recent times.”
