It is not a new thing that people of different religious backgrounds come together in a relationship and/or eventually get married. However, some people still frown at this because there has been numerous cases of parents disowning their children, and children despising their parents because of whom to marry or not to marry. Here are the views of some students of the University of Ibadan on the issue of inter religious relationships.
BARAKAT OWOLABI; AGRIC EXTENSION AND RURAL DEVE., 400L.
I am dating a Christian at least for now though I am not sure about my parents’ consent. If we remain together for long, and our parents are ready to bless the union, I do not mind. I can marry a Christian as long as I love him.
OLORUNFEMI SADE; HUMAN KINETICS, 400L.
Religion really matters to me ooo. I cannot date or marry someone who does not practice my religion because of my parents’, they will not allow that and I personally do not think it will work out well. I cannot change my religion because of marriage and marrying or dating someone who is not of my religion is definitely out of it because that will definitely affect my children which I do not want.
OLAYIWOLA HAONAT OLAITAN; LAW, 500L
I cannot date let alone marry someone who does not practice the same religion as me.
AKINWALE OLADOKUN; BOTANY, 400L
I can date or marry someone who is not of my religion. It is not a problem for me at all. Although, religious issues affected my last relationship.
OKAFOR OBINNA; PHILOSOPHY 400L
We will have to agree that she would convert to my religion. If she can’t, then there is no need deceiving ourselves, because the relationship won’t work.
