Convocation day is such a wonderful day that every student and parents look forward to. Every student’s prayer is not to wear convocation gown before it is time to do so. Of course we all know what that means. Hence, congratulating the students who are having their convocation for their hard-work is only appropriate.
…you have worked hard.
You are now one step closer to your dream.
I witnessed how much you have studied.
I saw how much effort you put to your learning
Now that you are graduating,
I cannot help but feel so proud of your achievement!
I must confess, the convocation rice was so tasty that I unconsciously ate to constipation. Well, thanks for the rice. It had me going all day.
To the crux of the matter; after convocation, what is next? Did you just say service? Maybe I should extend the question, after service then what? Yes! Go ahead, say it…employment? Yes, that must be it. After the convocation’s ostentatious fanfare what is next? This, we must discuss lest we appear like fools who are bankrupt in sane counsel.
The labour market is jam-packed already yet, the tertiary institutions keep churning out graduates like a faulty tap that cannot be turned off. Employment in Nigeria has so worsened that a first-class degree can no longer get you employed. Our streets are full of graduates with their impeccable certificates and CVs roaming around looking for jobs or should I say non-existent jobs or even better, reserved jobs; specially reserved for the “ogas at the top”. Such is the messy state of employment in Nigeria.
The wisest step to take is skill acquisition and self-employment. If the government will not live up to their responsibilities and you do not want to choose the path of crime which is of course fraught with evil and death, then it is high time you buried that ego and pride. Ego cannot put meal on your table. You are probably faced with that work you used to look with scorn. If you find it difficult to do those works, why not think up new ideas and innovations.
We have heard of great men who never completed their education but were able to come up with great innovations and which subsequently changed their lives. A very popular example of one of such men is Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft and one of the world’s richest men. The truth is, if these men can make it even without completing their education, then your chance of succeeding is very high. But you have to think!
