UI’SU Press Night’26: House Secretary Aspirants Address Electricity, Water Challenges in Halls

House Secretary aspirants Agunbiade Maleek and Emmanuel O. Akinbusuyi have outlined proposals to address electricity challenges in halls of residence at the University of Ibadan, while Maleek has identified water from Awba Dam as a possible source of waterborne disease concerns.

Speaking at the UI’SU Press Night, Maleek identified the heavy load on Ring 5 as a major electricity concern, explaining that it had prompted the current House Secretary to suggest moving Zik Hall to Ring 3.

“One issue about Ring 5 is that there’s a lot of weight on it. That’s why the current House Secretary suggested that they move Zik to Ring 3,” he said.

Akinbusuyi agreed on the need to address the problem and proposed advocating for the creation of new electricity rings to accommodate some hostels. He acknowledged that the process could cause power outages, making it difficult to carry out the work while the university is in session. He said he would advocate for the new rings to be created during the end-of-session break.

On water-related concerns, a press member questioned Maleek about how he intended to tackle waterborne diseases, noting that regularly washing water tanks, as proposed in his manifesto, was already a practice at the university.

In response, Maleek suggested that water from Awba Dam could be a source of the problem. When asked which hall of residence received water from the dam, he identified Zik Hall. However, no evidence was presented during the exchange to establish that the water was contaminated or responsible for waterborne diseases.
