The Hour Is Upon Us!

Today is the 27th of September, 2021 and it seems like every other day. If there’s any symbolism to draw from today’s date, it is that we are in the 10th week of lectures and examinations are around the corner. And as students continue to dilly-dally with their academic activities, attending social events at the expense of reading, they should know that there is a price to pay for gross negligence of academic tasks.

Second semester is always loaded with events and it is understandable when students can’t help it but to attend fun-filled events. Afterall, as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. We are not advising that students read books and books alone. The kernel of our urge is that students should not lose track of time and not prioritise important things, in this case their academic tasks, over the less important ones. We expect that the students are beginning to take full charge of their academics. School is not a scam, at least for University of Ibadan students.

As students take tests upon tests; as they write assignments upon assignments, we advise they maintain a healthy academic lifestyle to avoid breakdown before or during examinations. It is important for students to take proper care of themselves and make sure there are not stressed out to avoid health issues that would prevent then for writing the exams.

For the 100-L students, the University of Ibadan is no place to joke around. It is an intellectual hub where only the fittest survive. We advise that these students should get rid off friends who toxify their thinking, and are willing to lure them into unserious. It is no news that the University sends non-performing students away. As serious fresh students, you should have drawn out a plan/time table for yourself and following it religiously. Success does not come unbidden, as they say. By now, you should have covered demanding courses and be at the revision stage. If not, there is only a few time left to speed things up, else you end up becoming like Tayo and 10 others, who couldn’t continue with the University after his first year on the basis of a woeful academic performance.

Other students are not exempted from this charge. We however believe that old students should not be told what needs to be done. They are familiar with the system to know how it works, and the repercussion for negligence. We hope that the serious ones assist the fresh students in their areas of difficulties, and mentor them towards having outstanding performances.

As the Students’ Union elections close up, we advised the students not to support candidates to the point of losing focus. After the elections, what remains is university examinations. And the guys and ladies whose names you chanted will be of inconsequential help when you carry a blank head to the examination room. As you support Tamedo for the President during the day, ensure that you read your books at night. As you share political BCs and paste flyers across major places in the University, always remember there’s an examination lurking around. No activities top your academic activities. Nobody is worth failing for. As you ponder upon this, please act wisely.

By now, you should have got the whole gist of our editorial, but if you haven’t adding one more sentence won’t hurt. So, rather than we saying you should be focused as exams draw near, we’d just say:

“wait till October 25th.”

Thanks for reading and have a stress-free week.
