SRC Approves ₦1.206 Million for Mr. and Miss UI, Reduces Cash Prizes

At the University of Ibadan Students’ Representative Council (UI’SRC) sitting held on Wednesday, 15th of October 2025, members deliberated on the budget for the Mr. and Miss UI pageant, one of the major events lined up for the 2025 Students’ Union Week.

During the session, Hon. Joy proposed a further reduction in the cash prizes for the winners. The prizes, which previously stood at ₦120,000, ₦90,000, and ₦70,000, were adjusted downward to ₦90,000, ₦70,000, and ₦50,000 respectively. She stated that the amount was too much for a cash prize.

The motion for the reduction was moved by her and subsequently adopted by the Council.

Other details of the pageant budget were also reviewed. Lodging for the bootcamp, which would accommodate 25 participants including contestants and their chaperones, was pegged at ₦130,000 per day. Another Honourable clarified that the figure covers all participants collectively. Feeding expenses were also addressed, with provisions made for an estimated 25 persons per day.

It was further explained that the grading process for contestants commenced at the audition stage and continued through the bootcamp training before the final event.

Following the adjustments, the total approved budget for Mr. and Miss UI now stands at ₦1,206,000.

The Council noted that the review was aimed at promoting accountability and ensuring judicious use of funds within the Students’ Union Week budget.
