University Ibadan May Have An Acting VC

The University of Ibadan may have an acting Vice Chancellor following the unresolved issues that have trailed the appointment process of the next Vice Chancellor, a reliable source has confirmed.

The source who confirmed this development to OYOINSIGHT added that Dr. Uchenna Uba, the representative of the Education Minister on the selection committee has been removed.

Her removal, the source explained was “within 3 weeks of her interference in the process” as “she allowed herself to be nominated to seat as a member of the Interview Panel, when she was only meant to serve as an observer, and impartial representative of the Federal government.”

The source also added that the Council meeting today was planned to return to the VC process but it awaits directive from the Ministry after series of petition have been sent to the Minister of Education.

Different groups in the university have written several petitions to the Minister of Education as well as the Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, urging them to look into the appointment process as some top university members plan to impose a candidate on the university community.

These petitions have been followed by strong remonstrance by groups who, according to them, believe that imposing a candidate as the next VC would bring an end to the university’s sanctity.

The source, however, added that some university members wanted the appointment process to continue.

“Attempt failed flatly because the interview panel is short by one member now. Also one of the internal Senate members on the Interview Panel, Prof Ayoola, still has a case to answer as to his transparency over a leaked WhatsApp message that he sent to Prof Ayodele,” the source stated.

The source further added that “feelers from Abuja is that the process of UI VC will be reviewed for a new beginning. Also, it can only be transparent at the expiration of the tenure of the current VC who is seen as the major player in the process of manipulation.”
