TALES OF OUR PRIDE

WHERE IS OUR SRC?

“De lege ferenda”, a Latin phrase that literally means; “of the law as it should be”, which describes how the law of a society ought to be, a means to the set of rules binding to the citizens of a society. One would wonder if there exists a society without a body that makes the laws of the populace in that region, if there is an association without a group of people to checkmate the activities of the leaders of that association, a territory where someone seems to rule or lead as the case may be and a council is not put in place for the creating and enactment of laws that govern the supposed territory, a lawless area, one in which is tantamount to a young man that smokes marijuana and does not have the slightest clue that it might dangerously affect his body if he continues in that act, a disastrous occurrence, a society heading into doldrums, a naked dance of shame and above all, a disastrous means to an immeasurable catastrophe. I would consider the old Oyo Empire, a kingdom of great economic prowess and a stalwart structure, a citadel of great fortunes and a long roll of monarchs. The Alaafin (the title given to the ruler of the empire) might have been the most recognized due to his place as the ruler of that empire, but his royalty would not have been confirmed if the King makers were not present to fulfill their duties of not only choosing and making the king, but also making the rules of the land and maintaining and sustaining norms, customs and long lasting tradition. Imagine the place of the King makers, deemed unnecessary and stupidly redundant, the predisposed laws that would have been set in for the descendants of the empire to follow. What did we have? A strong and great empire built on the premise of sound and unbiased laws that were functional and imperative in the making of one of thelargest empires in Africa. The list of other great empires is endless, but one thing still remains is that these societies were built on a solid foundation of strong, sound and definite laws. They could have been largely unwritten and oral, but the fact still remains that these laws created the right niche for themselves and placed their importance in the sands of time. For a long time now, the Technology and Engineering Student Association has been running without the Legislative arm of the Association. One would have wondered how some of the activities that have been conducted by the executives were done without the legislative arm of the Association. The budgets of the programs which include; the Freshmen Welcome, the Professor Omole Cup, otherwise known as the Gala Cup, the 400 level get together and any other event that might have gone under our notice. Even the TESA week of last session, how would it have been organized if there was no legislative arm to sit on the budget of the weeklong event, pruning whatever unnecessary activity and estimates that might have been discovered as a result of a thorough investigation. Ceteris paribus, this might have reduced claims of embezzlement and financial misappropriation in the last administration, still rearing its ugly head in the castles of the lofty hills of the Faculty, making us dance by the wicked tunes of deceit, notwithstanding the sounds ringing in our hears like the early morning cock crow. Howbeit, that the laws which would have been enacted in the legislative arm of the Association would make the Executives pay close attention to their constitutional duties and keep them on their toes as to the ills of maladministration and other societal vices plaguing the current administration. The bills that might still be read and passed in the house and most importantly, the Constitution the Association is abiding by; which is the supreme law of any society, the set of laws in which any other law that does not go in line with it must be considered null and void. I consider this a breach in core societal values and a low level of trust in the capabilities of students that would act as law makers in deciding what set of laws would be useful for the Association, undermining the talents and contributions of intelligent students of the faculty of Technology that might likely use whatever experience they get to become relevant people in the society, an advantage over any person who is willing to vie for a seat in the National Assembly and State House of Assemblies. Why on earth would we have just the Executive arm of the Association running and the law making body of the Association absent in the dealings of checkmating their executives and seeing that our Association grows and develops knowing fully well that the secrets to a developed Association is in the strengths of the Laws and the citizens. This is really astonishing, because wherever and whenever laws are endorsed in a society, there begins to be order and a desirable approachtowards the tools that would build a lasting legacy in that society, the other way, tyranny begins. Whatever steps that should be taken towards getting our Student Representative Council back should start as soon as possible. A committee might be set up, so as to look at the reasons why the council has been in unwarranted extinction, not to mention, its effectiveness and efficiency, a way into looking at how the legislative arm can work to an optimized level, one in which has a structure that is modeled or likened to a successful government, hell bent on the laws made for the people and by the people. The committee should however consist of students that have an experience of working in a Student Representative Council, and they have a good reputation of serving their constituency. In addition to that, the Association should also work on a constitution review which would go a long way in solving some challenges the Association is facing. In the words of Bobby Seale, he said “Revolution is about the need to re-evolve political, economic and social justice and power back into the hands of the people, preferably through legislation and policies that make human sense.
