On Mayowa’s death: …

…Mayowa’s death; a lesson for Tedderites, the hall management and the university community…
Alaran Muslihudeen Mayowa was a first class 200 level student of the department of Human Kinetics (KHE), faculty of education, University of Ibadan. He suffocated and fainted while watching the Uefa Champions League match between Barcelona and Bayern on May 6 which ultimately resulted in his death. He was said to be an asthmatic patient.
While the debate has dragged on whether he died before arrival or at the JAJA clinic is still inconclusive, a fact that has however remained so true is that he suffocated and fainted as a result of overcrowding in the Independence hall junior common room (JCR).
Suffocation is a condition that results when a person is deprived of Oxygen which can ultimately lead to the death of such individual. Oxygen deprivation can either be direct i.e. when oxygen supply is deliberately cut off from a particular area or indirect where the oxygen in a particular area is not sufficient for the demand of people present at the  place, this usually because demand has become greater than supply; overcrowding. The later case scenario appears to be what led to the death of our dear colleague and friend; Alaran Mayowa.
The above on itself draws a sad conclusion that unless something drastic is done to make our junior and senior common rooms in the halls more ventilated then we can as well wait for the next victim of suffocation. It is no news that our common rooms are unusually crowded during any high profile football matches. This is why the room should be as free from any  oxygen obstruction as possible. A common room by its very name is meant to allow access to a large variety of people but a common room that has restricted itself to one access door is makes a mockery of itself.
It is however saddening that in the hall of fame the hall management is doing the exact opposite of what needs to be done to our JCR. The architects of the Hall of fame knew why they had to put several access doors to the JCR but these doors has been reduced to just one which behoves the question has the hall management ruled out the possibility of the occurrence of an accident like fire outbreak in the JCR. Just imagine what would happen if there is an El Classico match and fire happens to starts, the resultant effect is better imagined than experienced.
Alaran Muslihudeen Mayowa is dead, no amount of mourning or protest can bring him back but we can honour his memory by making sure no other person again passes away the way he did. We can do these by making our common room to truly represent its name a ‘COMMON ROOM’
